Jack Murphy Stadium, better known as simply "The Murph" to San Diego Sports fans, opened in 1967 as San Diego Stadium. It was renamed in 1981 to honor Murphy's efforts in the 1960s to build a multi-purpose stadium in the city and thus attract a baseball team and keep the pro football team in town. The facility's first tenant was the pro football team who moved in in 1967. Big league baseball arrived in 1969. The baseball team moved to a new, baseball-only park in 2004, while the pro football team stayed until 2017 before moving to Los Angeles.
